New Insight into the Prevalence and Risk Factors for Three Distinct Hoof Conformation Traits in UK Commercial Sheep Flocks

Lameness in sheep continues to be a global health, welfare and economic concern. Damaged, misshapen or overgrown feet have the potential cause lameness either directly, indirectly. There is lack of understanding predisposing factors for different hoof conformation traits sheep. Our exploratory study aimed investigate prevalence of, risk for, three distinct relating sole heel, wall, wall overgrowth. Feet 400 ewes from four UK commercial farms were inspected at time points across 12 months. For each trait, four-point ordinal system was used score individual claw, foot-level scores calculated. We present 92.4% observations affected by ≥1 traits.
